Estella M. Gustilo, Ph.D. Joins BSKB

January 28, 2021– Falls Church, Va. – Birch, Stewart, Kolasch & Birch, LLP (BSKB) is pleased to announce the arrival of Estella M. Gustilo, Ph.D. to the firm’s prosecution practice.

During her career, Dr. Estella Gustilo focused on biochemistry and molecular biology research.  After graduate school, she worked at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, CA studying protein folding.  She helped develop high-throughput assays used to test small molecules and their effect on protein folding, specifically the misfolding of protein Transthyretin, which causes debilitating disease and often results in death.  After working at Scripps, Dr. Gustilo went on to study the translation initiation of mRNA, specifically of the plant viral RNA BYDV and the human tumor suppressor p53 mRNA.  Dr. Gustilo’s research led her to co-author multiple, highly-cited, peer-reviewed articles in renowned scientific journals.

Before joining BSKB, Dr. Gustilo taught at several universities in New York City (CUNY, NYIT) and briefly at George Mason University.  She has taught Biology and a variety of Chemistry courses, such as General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysical Chemistry, and others. 

As a Registered Patent Agent at BSKB, Dr.Gustilo will specialize in the prosecution of chemical and life-science patent applications.

Dr. Gustilo earned her B.S. in Biology from the College of Charleston and her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from North Carolina State University.
