Experience
Raymond Stewart has practiced patent law since 1960, first as a patent examiner and then in private practice. His specialty is organic chemistry with particular emphasis on pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals and polymers and, in recent years, the neurosciences and biotechnology.
Mr. Stewart is an expert in interference practice and has been active on interference panels and committees for a number of years. He has been a frequent lecturer on U.S. patent law and practice before numerous groups and associations in the United States and abroad.
Mr. Stewart supervises the patent portfolios of a variety of companies. He also handles a large docket of trademark applications and inter partes matters.
Mr. Stewart has been Chairman of the BSKB Summer Training Program for patent students since 1983. He has also been active internationally in discussions concerning the Patent Law Treaty and as a lecturer and writer concerning the NAFTA and GATT Treaties. Specifically, Mr. Stewart represented FICPI (International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys), an NGO, at the Diplomatic Conference on Patent Law Harmonization at The Hague in 1991. Mr. Stewart also attended the Diplomatic Conference on the Patent Law Treaty held in Geneva in June 2000 as an observer for FICPI. He is currently the Vice President of the Work and Study Commission of FICPI and is the Immediate Past President of the U.S. section of FICPI. In these activities, Mr. Stewart has often participated in discussions among governmental as well as non-governmental organizations with respect to issues involved in harmonizing the patent laws of various countries in the world.
Since 1990, Mr. Stewart's primary activities in the law firm have included litigation, the preparation of patent validity and infringement opinions, appeals work, client counseling, the management of patent and trademark portfolios (domestic and foreign), interference practice, due diligence studies, arbitration and trademark oppositions and cancellations.

- Patent Examiner, U.S. Patent Office, 1960-1962: Examined patent applications in the field of polymer chemistry. Chemical and Engineering News, American Chemical Society, Washington, D.C. Technical writer and editor, 1962-1964. Wrote and edited various news articles concerning technical advances and developments in the chemical field.
- Dicke & Craig, Washington, D.C. Patent Agent, 1964-1968: All phases of chemical patent prosecution.
- Craig, Antonelli, Stewart & Hill, Washington, D.C. Patent attorney; partner; 1968-1971: All phases of chemical patent prosecution; wrote and prosecuted many patent applications in the field of microbiology with application to the production of pharmaceuticals by fermentation.
